After Chicago and Paris, Laurent GARNIER ran the 2006 New York Marathon in the colors of LCI

The New York Marathon is one of the biggest running events in the world, attracting over 37,000 runners from all kinds of backgrounds and nationalities.

Beyond the lucrative prize of over 600,000 US dollars, a fantastic atmosphere created by 2 million spectators lining the course and 315 million watching at home boosted the moral of all those taking part.

Out of the 700,000 who took part in the previous marathons, none of them would deny that crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the greatest feelings one could ever experience in a lifetime!

Our very own Laurent Garnier, director of one of our instruction engineering centers, once again beat his own marathon record this year with a time of 4 hours 13 minutes and 9 seconds, which was 9 minutes less than his last marathon (Paris, April 2006) and 38 minutes less than the one he ran in Chicago in October 2005!

It is this type of achievement which encapsulates the spirit found in our teams here at LCI: Commitment and performance in action.

Here are a few facts to give you an idea of the sheer size of the New York marathon:

• 42,000 packs of Powerbar Gel (energy bars given to the runners when glycemia levels are low)
• 100 live music acts
• 1.5 million cups of water
• 20 warm-up areas
• 45 official clocks
• 20,400 “TYLENOL 8 hour” tablets (Canadian painkiller)
• 7,800 kilos of ice
• 4,055 rolls of adhesive tape
• 25 first aid posts
• 60 employees all year round
• 2,800 access passes handed out
• a total economic impact of 200 million US Dollars for the 2006 marathon

I would like to thank the Regional and General councils, the Bayonne Anglet Biarritz area, the elected representatives from Biarritz and Bidart, and finally the representatives from the UIMM (the metallurgy industry union) and the CCI (the Chamber of Commerce and Industry) for their attendance.

For a Breton like me, it is a great honor to be given such a warm welcome in this wonderful part of the Basque country.

Emeric and Erik are now sailing the same ship!!
And you, ladies and gentleman, who share this moment with us, are witnessing the completion of this shared project which our respective teams have planned and built together.

It therefore gives me great pleasure to meet and thank:
Mr. Emeric D’Arcimoles,
Mr. Didier Desnoyer,
Mr. Serge Maillé,
And Mr. Philippe Commet.

It is important that we acknowledge the work of Gérard Brohez, Jean-Louis Mostajo and Rémi Roux the project’s architects and builders who are with us today. Without them this project would not have been possible.

Finally, I would like to thank the crew, without whom this ship could not to complete its present and future missions. These are the people actively working to make this ship operational:

• The Tarnos training center and its instructors.
• The maintenance personnel.
• The industrial security personnel.
• The IT department.
• The purchasing department.
• And Turbomeca external relations.

I don’t believe in luck. I believe in the careful planning of events:

Turbomeca and LCI’s relationship can be traced as far back as 1981, the year LCI obtained its first contract.

It has now been 25 years that Turbomeca has been putting its trust in the men and women at LCI, and today I would like thank and pay tribute to our dear client, who has now become a partner.

Since 1991, the LCI teams and Marc Zanette in particular have been developing training services that have evolved constantly over the years both in design and materials, and the technology that has enabled us to offer these training courses.   

It was in 2002 that Turbomeca first used our training service.

The confidence gained over the last 4 years has led to the fruition of this project, boosted by the various managers who have been faced with an increasing demand by Turbomeca’s clients for quality training.

Coming from all over the world, these clients will be trained in ideal surroundings in a center striving for quality and excellence.

The forecast for the number of training courses to be given is an ambitious one, and will be constantly increasing over the next five years:

• In 2006, 280 courses are scheduled.
• In 2007 = 311
• In 2008 = 359
• In 2009 = 397
• In 2010 = 430

This means that in the next 5 years, the number of training courses given will increase by 50%.

"Flying" better and longer, while reducing costs related to maintenance and fixed assets.

As Emeric stated, this is a key concept and our shared objective enabling us to provide better service for Turbomeca’s clients and particularly for their maintenance teams whose job it is to ensure that these engines are flown in the best conditions of safety and availability and at the right cost.

The Izarbel site and the human, technical and training resources deployed offer trainees innovative training courses which focus on integrating practical aspects into theoretical courses resulting in a qualification complying with the new aeronautical standards.

The Izarbel training center is the cornerstone of which will soon be an even more ambitious project within the aeronautical sector and will be launched at the Ruwel site in Bayonne.

You’ll never be heading in the right direction if you don’t know your destination.
And we know where we’re heading!!!

Development, performance and excellence;
Creating value and new employment opportunities.

Our ambition is to create a resources center which will cater to the needs of the future aeronautics pole, to perpetuate know-how and technological developments in the heart of the Basque country.

To achieve this, we will need all your energy and the support from council members and local partners.

I hope this speech hasn’t been too long, but I cannot end it without thanking André Dehondt who I’m sure will be sad to part with his "baby" when he hands the center over to Vincent Coulom.

Vincent is now the man of the moment. His mission will be to do all in his power to best serve our client Turbomeca and assist its development by drawing on the expertise of the LCI workforce and be the driving force in our future projects together.
